Red Sox Rally Their Way to Victory over Detroit

3-3 ballgame.  It was the bottom of the 8th, and ex-Red Sox pitcher Alex Wilson was on the mound.  It was high in the air.  I knew it was gone the minute I saw it.  JBJ had just nailed a go-ahead home run to give the Red Sox the 5-3 lead.

The Red Sox went on to top the Tigers 5-3.  Each team got 11 hits in this big hitting game.  Mitch Moreland went 3-4 with 2 RBI, JBJ went 2-4 with another 3 RBI.  Lots of good plays by JBJ and Mookie Betts made the game interesting and I was at the game and witnessed the great comeback victory.

It started out ugly for the Sox though.  Brian Johnson gave up a dinger with 1 out in the 1st inning to Nicholas Castellanos.  But the Tigers weren’t done.  Both Victor and J.D. Martinez got on base, and it was 1st and 2nd with 2 down.  Then Justin Upton knocked Victor Martinez in with his single up the middle.  It was 2-0 Tigers after 1 inning and Brian Johnson had thrown almost 30 pitches.  Johnson tried to settle down after that, but in the next two innings he reached 70 pitches.  He had given up 5 hits and a walk in 3 innings.

Then to begin the 4th, Mikie Mahtook nailed a dinger into the bleachers.  3-0 Detroit.

However, the Red Sox began to rally in the 4th inning.  Mitch Moreland answered with a leadoff home run to center.  Then after a Benintendi single and Ramirez walk, it was 1st and 2nd. Then Bradley Jr. hit a line drive single to knock in a 2nd run.  3-2 Tigers.

However, Pablo Sandoval ended the rally on a double play.  Panda struggled all game, striking out twice and grounding into this double play.  He also made 2 plays that could’ve been called errors.

The Tigers tried to strike back.  Victor Martinez got a base hit, and then J.D. Martinez doubled to center and Victor was on third, but it wasn’t enough.  After Brian Johnson and Heath Hembree were done, Joe Kelly was an absolute machine against Detroit in the 7th.

Mookie Betts tried to start another rally when he doubled, but it failed.  However, the Red Sox came back in the 8th.  Alex Wilson, the former Red Sox player, was pitching.  Fans were booing and taunting him.  Bogaerts got on base, and then he reached second when Wilson wildly tried to pick him off at first.  Then Moreland drove in another run with an RBI single.  It was a tie ballgame, 3-3.  Benintendi lined out, and Ramirez was out on a lazy fly ball.

Then, JBJ hit a huge dinger to right.  Everyone was cheering.  They had come back!  The Red Sox were up 5-3 going into the top of the 9th, and Craig Kimbrel came right into the game.  After a strikeout, a foul pop up and another strikeout, the Red Sox won 5-3.  Kimbrel got the 3 out, 10 pitch save.

Here’s the final strike.  My good luck may have factored in again.  I even got a picture of the win dance, where JBJ was honored.  They did their ski jump and I got it on camera.

Can they get into a good stretch after a big win tonight?  Chris Sale starts tomorrow and it should be a rude awakening for Detroit tomorrow night.

Red Sox Shutout Mariners, Streak Extends to 6 Games

3-0 Red Sox.  The Mariners’ best hitter, Robinson Cano, was up.  He hits a high fly ball to deep center.  It nearly hits the wall for a huge double, but Jackie Bradley Jr. jumps up to save it!  The next inning, Bradley crushed a dinger to center.  Good defense led to good offense.

Brian Johnson also pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 8 and giving up no walks and just 5 hits.

The Red Sox started to score in the bottom of the 1st.  Betts walked, and Pedroia was hit on the arm.  Mariners pitcher Rob Whalen was out of control in his first start of 2017.  Xander Bogaerts knocked Betts in on a RBI single, but Pedroia was out at third.  Whalen continued to struggle as Benintendi hit a single to knock in Bogaerts.  Hanley Ramirez was also hit, and Whalen looked exhausted after walking one, hitting two and giving up two hits.  Ramirez stole second as Whalen walked JBJ.  It was 2-0 Red Sox, and they weren’t done.  Sandy Leon hit a single to drive in Benintendi.  However, Ramirez tried to score and was ruled out.  3-0 after 1 inning.

Meanwhile, Brian Johnson was on fire, and he was being backed up by good defense.  Mookie Betts saved a home run ball in the 4th, and JBJ made a leaping catch in the 6th.   In the bottom of that inning, Mitch Moreland singled to right, and JBJ hit a two-run shot to left.  5-0 Red Sox.  Brian Johnson continued to do well.  He finished his 4th 1-2-3 inning of the game in the 8th and the Red Sox scored one more run in the bottom of the inning.  Hanley Ramirez drove the ball to left for a base hit, and after a wild pitch got Hanley to second, Mitch Moreland hit the RBI single to drive him in.  The Red Sox led 6-0 through 8.

In the top of the 9th, Johnson was still in the game.  He struck out one, and then defense backed him up to end the inning.  JBJ caught Nelson Cruz’s line drive on a diving catch, and he made the catch of the game to wrap it up.  Seager hit another line drive, and JBJ leaped up for another big catch.  The Red Sox won 6-0.  Johnson tossed a complete game, and JBJ and Betts combined for 4 great catches.

The Red Sox now have a 6 game winning streak and Porcello starts today.  Can the streak live on in the series finale against the Mariners?

Errors, Lack of Hitting Cause Sox to Lose

The Red Sox lost their streak and their momentum with a 3-0 loss last night.  Rick Porcello actually pitched really well, with 0 earned runs.  It was errors that allowed the Blue Jays to score.

Pablo Sandoval had an error again.  Even Gold Glove winner Mitch Moreland had an error in addition to going 0-4 after hitting really well during the winning streak.  The 2nd inning was when the Jays scored all their runs.  The two errors happened back to back at the start of the 2nd inning and all of the sudden it was 2nd and 3rd.  After Justin Smoak struck out, Darwin Barney got a base hit that knocked both of them in.  2-0 Jays.  Kevin Pillar singled to make it first and second.  Then Ezequiel Carrera hit a single down the line for a third run.  It was 3-0 Jays, but Porcello didn’t have a single earned run.

It was pretty quiet after that, and pitching was pretty good.  But the Red Sox also blew several scoring opportunities.  In the 5th, Sandy Leon grounded into a double play with 1st and 2nd.  Hanley Ramirez did the same thing in the 6th!  Instead of 2 innings in a row where they successfully scored, there were 2 innings in a row of blown opportunities.

Both starting pitchers, Rick Porcello and Francisco Liriano had amazing games.  Neither gave up any earned runs, Liriano gave up just 4 hits in 5.1 innings, and Porcello gave up just 6 hits in 7 innings.

I was expecting the defense to back up Porcello but Porcello did fine.  The defense was the problem.  Hopefully, Porcello’s good pitching will combine with good defense for a win the next time he starts.

The Blue Jays ended up winning, 3-0.  Unfortunately, Liriano got the win, and Porcello got the loss despite a great pitcher’s duel that was ruined by errors.

Chris Sale starts in today’s game at 12:30.  Will the Red Sox win their 5th out of the last 6 and take this series, or will the Blue Jays surprise them again and win?

Betts, Moreland Lead Sox to Victory in High Scoring Showdown

The Red Sox came through again.  They topped the Blue Jays 8-7 in a high scoring showdown.

Brian Johnson really got rattled early.  In the first inning, Kevin Pillar led off with a double, followed by an RBI single by Kendrys Morales.  1-0 Jays already.  But Toronto wasn’t done.  Tulowitzki got a base hit to make it first and second and a Justin Smoak double scored a second run.  The Jays were up 2-0 in one inning.  Johnson was able to get out of the inning after that.  But in the 2nd, after a walk, Pillar doubled again, and after intentionally walking Jose Bautista, Johnson was stuck with the bases loaded.  Thankfully, the Red Sox defense helped him get out of the inning without a run.  Hopefully, they’ll do the same for Rick Porcello tonight.

The Red Sox struck back in the third though.  Bogaerts and Benintendi started he rally with back to back singles.  Then Betts made that three singles in a row and a run scored.  2-1 Toronto.  After a strikeout, Mitch Moreland hit another RBI single to score two more runs!

The Red Sox had a 3-2 lead, but not for long.  Justin Smoak smoked a leadoff solo shot to left to begin the bottom of the 3rd.  It was a tie game, 3-3.

The Red Sox took the lead back in the 5th though.  Betts got another base hit, and Hanley Ramirez knocked him in with a long double over Jose Bautista’s head.  It was 4-3 Sox.  But the next at bat, Moreland hit his 10th double of the year to knock in Hanley Ramirez.  That was Moreland’s 3rd RBI, and it was 5-3 Red Sox.  After that, Stroman was done.  Aaron Loup came in, but Sandoval just got another RBI hit to knock in Moreland!  6-3 Sox.  The Blue Jays went to their bullpen again, and Dominic Leone finished the inning.

The Blue Jays just struck right back though. Russell Martin crushed a solo homer, and the Jays narrowed the lead to 2 runs.  It was 6-4 Jays to end the 5th.

But in the top of the 7th Mookie Betts answered.  He nailed a solo shot to left, and made it 7-4 Red Sox.  The 3 run lead was back.  Betts also had his first homer.  The one week I don’t start him in my Home Run Derby pool, he hits a homer!  But it’s good for the Sox.

After Brian Johnson was done, the Red Sox bullpen actually did a somewhat good job quieting down the Jays.  They got in a couple of jams, but managed to hold the Blue Jays without a run for a few innings.    Kevin Pillar actually hit a third double, but Fernando Abad and Matt Barnes (after Abad was done) got them out of the inning. The Blue Jays also had 1st and 2nd in two other innings, but the Sox managed to shut them down.

In the top of the 8th the Sox scored again.  Pablo Sandoval started it with another base hit!  He was 3 for 4 on the day, with one RBI.  The Jays almost got him out on a pickoff but after a review, he was ruled safe.  After Marco Hernandez walked, Benintendi drove in the run with a ground rule double. It was 8-4 Red Sox going into the bottom of the 8th.

After a quiet 9th inning for the Sox, Barnes stayed in the game for the bottom of the 9th.  But he almost blew the game.  After 2 outs, Russell Martin walked, and Steve Pearce hit an RBI single to knock him in.  Then Ezequiel Carrera pinch hit, and he nailed a two-run homer to make it 8-7.  It was a close game now.  The Blue Jays almost came back.  But Matt Barnes put them away before any more scoring occurred.  This was all with two outs, so all that was needed to end the inning was one line drive.  That was it.

IMG_1701

The Red Sox just barely saved the game, a game they would’ve lost without an explosive lineup.  Brian Johnson actually got his first major league win.  The Sox cannot do this every game, but they’ve somehow won 4 in a row since Porcello’s horrid start on Friday.

Porcello starts again tonight.  Will the winning streak live on or will the Red Sox and Porcello blow it?  Check out my latest Baseball Bits for more on Porcello’s case.

Benintendi, Porcello Lead Sox to Opening Day Victory

The Red Sox won again on Opening Day.  They topped the Pirates 5-3.  The Red Sox were powered by stellar pitching from Rick Porcello and a 5th inning rally started by a JBJ triple with two outs.  He nailed it into the right corner and speeded around the bases.  Pablo Sandoval went on to drive him in, and by the time Benintendi walked up to the plate, it was 1st and 2nd and the Red Sox had a 2-0 lead. Then, Benintendi nailed a homer into the right field corner, giving the Red Sox a 5-0 lead in the 5th inning.

Early on, it was a pitchers duel.  In the first 4 innings, Gerrit Cole gave up just 1 hit and struck out 2.  Rick Porcello gave up just 3 hits and struck out 5 in the first 6 innings.  He was backed up by some great defense by JBJ and Andrew Benintendi.  After the 5th inning rally, the Red Sox slipped up a little bit, but recovered.  However, in the 7th inning, the Pirates got back into the game.

With David Freese on first, Francisco Cervelli crushed a double into left field.  Then soon after Josh Harrison drove David Freese in.  With that, Porcello left the game while it was still going well.  He was credited with a quality start.  Then Matt Barnes came in.  But the rally continued with another RBI single, followed by a walk and a sac fly.  It was now 5-3.  After the 7th inning, the pitchers began to thrive again.  The rest of the relievers that came in during the 7th and 8th were doing well.  Then Kimbrel came in for the Sox in the top of the 9th.  Despite letting the Pirates get away with 1st and 2nd, Kimbrel earned the save.

The Red Sox won again on Opening Day.  They return to action on Wednesday night, as Chris Sale debuts.

Best Super Bowl Ever: Pats Win 5th Ring in OT Miracle

Image result for tom brady super bowl li trophy

Best, Super Bowl, ever.  It’s a miracle.  I’m still in disbelief.  This was the greatest comeback ever.  The first Super Bowl overtime ever.  The Pats had comeback all the way.  They had scored on two flawless drives in a row, now it was 28-28.  The first Super Bowl overtime ever had begun.

The toss was about to happen.  The Pats called their usual heads, and won the toss.  They marched down the field, treated it like their regular, weekly business.  It was great pass after great pass.  The Pats had made it to the 15 yard line.  They threw to Bennett.  It looked like a touchdown.  It was incomplete, but a flag was down.  It was pass interference!  The Pats got the ball at the 2.The Pats tried to find Bennett again.  The Falcons almost intercepted it, and ended their game like the Pats did to Seattle.  But it was an incomplete pass.  The Pats didn’t make the same mistake twice though.  White ran it, and it was a touchdown!  James White just made it in!  The Pats had won their 5th Super Bowl!!!

The Pats had made a 25 point comeback to win the game.  I thought it was all over when Atlanta scored their fourth TD.  The Pats were down by 25, and they won!!  The next biggest comeback in the Super Bowl was a 10 point comeback.  The Patriots have shattered records, and made history.   Brady leads all QBs in Super Bowl wins, and will forever be regarded as the G.O.A.T.  Belichick will be regarded as the best coach ever.  The Patriots have the best sports dynasty ever.

To begin the game, the Pats didn’t win the opening toss, and the Falcons deferred.  The Patriots were hoping for a good drive, but instead went 3 and out.  The Falcons got the ball and on their first play, Devonta Freeman ran it for 37 yards.  The defense was fooled by the play!  They just couldn’t keep up.  However, the Pats were able to stuff Matt Ryan and end the drive.  Things went like that throughout the 1st quarter.  There was a lot of sloppy play by both teams early.  To start the 2nd quarter, The Pats even got to the opposing 40 to start one drive with an Edelman catch, but lost their drive on a fumble by Blount.  It was still 0-0.  But after the fumble recovery, the Falcons went wild.  Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman led an amazing drive, and Freeman went on to score the first Falcons TD.  The next drive was very similar, and they quickly scored another touchdown.

It was now 14-0 Falcons.  Many people were already starting to lose hope in the Pats, but I still believed they could win.  The Pats struggled to move down the field on their next drive, in attempt to respond.  They managed to get to the 23, but Robert Alford intercepted it, and went all the way to the end zone.

Image result for robert alford sbli pick six

By the time he was at the 50, he was long gone.  The odds were looking pretty slim for the Pats.  The Patriots went on a decent drive before the half, but were held to a field goal.  They needed a touchdown, and without that, things weren’t looking good when it was 21-3 Falcons at halftime.

After a strong defensive start to the 3rd quarter, I was starting to regain hope, but the great Falcons offense marched down the field for another touchdown on their next drive.  It was 28-3.  There was only a quarter and a half left.  Even I knew the game was probably over.  But shortly after, the comeback began. The Pats didn’t look great yet.  They almost lost the chance to score.  But the Pats managed to get to the end zone.  It was their first touchdown of the game, to James White.  But Stephen Gostkowski missed the PAT and there was only about two minutes left in the 3rd quarter.  It didn’t look good.

The Pats quickly got the ball back, and managed to get a field goal.  They needed a touchdown, but couldn’t quite get it.  It was 28-12, and the odds were still heavily against the Patriots with only 9 1/2 minutes left.  But the Pats began to make miracles happen.  When Atlanta got the ball back, Dont’a Hightower strip sacked Matt Ryan and the Pats got the ball at the Falcons 25, with a little over half the quarter left!  They quickly got to the red zone, and Amendola caught the TD.  The Pats went for 2 with no doubt, and James White ran it in on a direct snap!  It was 28-20.  The Pats had a chance!

Image result for danny amendola super bowl li td

However, the Falcons were quickly marching down the field.  Devonta Freeman nearly took it to the 50, and Julio Jones caught a 27 yard pass at the sidelines that few players could catch, as he barely got both feet in.  However, Matt Ryan got stuffed and knocked out of field goal range on the next play!!  They should’ve just ran the ball and went for the field goal.  The Pats might have lost if that happened.  Instead, on the next play, with the Patriots pass rush pressuring Matt Ryan, they were called for holding and pushed out of field goal range.

The Pats had one more chance to tie it, but they would have to go 91 yards with just 3.5 minutes left.  But these situations are what makes Brady the G.O.A.T.  In the playoffs Brady had fourth quarter comeback drives 9 times before and he was going for his 10th.  The Pats quickly got into a rhythm, with quick passes to Hogan and Mitchell.  Then, a miracle happened.  It looked like Atlanta was going to intercept the pass and end the game.  But Edelman managed to catch the ball with 3 Falcons players fighting for the ball. After it bounced around several times, he saved the ball just before it hit the ground after bouncing off a Falcon leg!!  It was the best catch I have ever seen!!

Image result for julian edelman super bowl li catch

Amendola followed it up with another great catch!!  Pretty soon, the Patriots were in the red zone, and the Falcons red zone defense that actually looked good early in the game failed again.  White ran in the TD.

It looked like the Pats made the 2-point conversion to Danny Amendola. But there was a flag. For a moment, I was nearly heartbroken.  But it turned out it was on the Falcons and the 2-point conversion was good!!!  The Pats had miraculously tied it up!!  The Pats defense actually shut down the Falcons so quickly on Atlanta’s final drive that they got the ball back in the final seconds.  Lewis ran it on a fake in the hopes of catching Atlanta off guard but Lewis tweaked his knee as he headed toward the sidelines at the 48 with the Atlanta defense in pursuit.  This game was going to overtime. It was the first overtime in Super Bowl history.

The Pats won the toss, and did their thing, treating it like a regular drive.  White just made it in, and it was a game!!!  The Pats won 34-28.  Brady won his 5th ring!!  The last 12 minutes of this game was some of the best football ever seen.  DeflateGate will no longer be a topic of conversation. Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, the Patriots dynasty and this game will be the topic of conversation in the coming years.  They broke some other records too.  They broke the record for most passing yards in a Super Bowl, and running back James White broke the record for most receptions in Super Bowl history!!  Yes, a running back now holds that record and also the record for most receiving yards by a RB in a Super Bowl!!

Image result for tom brady super bowl li trophy

Bill Belichick also smiled, for real!!!  He has a reason to.  He and Brady each broke or tied a Super Bowl win record, Brady winning the most of any QB, and Belichick passed Chuck Noll for most Super Bowl wins as a head coach.

Tom Brady was the clear MVP, and receivers like Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman impacted the game big time, but Super Bowls are won as a team.  On the Patriots, there is one guy that isn’t getting the credit he deserves for this win.

Unsung Hero

James White

Image result for james white

James White led the Pats with 110 receiving yards and a receiving TD. He broke the record most points scored by any player in the Super Bowl, with 20. He also had 29 rushing yards and 2 rushing TDs.  That’s 3 TDs!!  He additionally ran in a 2 point conversion.  Although Brady had 466 yards (almost 2 times more than Matt Ryan), White was a Top 2 contributor in both rushing and receiving, and scored as more touchdowns than Tom Brady threw.

The dynasty lives on and Tom will likely start his preparations for the next Super Bowl after the parade as the team is already favored to repeat next year.

Red Sox Stay Hot, Crush Tigers

The Red Sox got a big win over the Detroit Tigers last night, blowing them out 10-2.  Rick Porcello went 7 strong innings while Hanley and Pedey stayed hot and David Ortiz and JBJ jacked homers.

The Red Sox started off the game with a 4 run, 2 dinger 1st inning.  Xander Bogaerts showed signs of overcoming his slump as he started off the game with a base hit after Pedroia grounded out to second.  Then David Ortiz crushed the ball high into right field.  It was long gone, a no-doubter.  Then after Betts flew out to right, Hanley Ramirez stayed hot since returning to the club  with another base hit.  JBJ then blasted one in the same direction as Ortiz’s for the 2nd HR of the inning.   Red Sox took a 4-0 lead to start the game, very assuring after collapsing in the first game of the series.

But the Tigers struck back in the 2nd and took advantage of Porcello’s weakness from 2015, giving up home runs.  It would’ve been a solo shot but Porcello could not hang on to the throw to 1st and J.D. Martinez had himself a 2-run dinger.  Later in the game J.D. Martinez lined a hit through Xander Bogaerts’ broken glove.  J. D. would go 2 for 3 on the day but he would account for half the hits Porcello gave up in 7 stellar innings.

This was Porcello’s first start in Detroit since being traded for Yoenis Cespedes and he showed he was comfortable at Comerica after all those years with the Tigers, who also have a lot of former Red Sox on their roster.  The Tigers threatened only one more time and had 1st and 2nd in the 4th but former Sox’ catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia failed to extend a potential 2-out rally.

Bogaerts got another hit in the 5th and after an Ortiz walk, the Red Sox had a scoring opportunity of their own.  But Mookie Betts grounded into a force out.  I don’t think Betts was at fault though.  Miguel Cabrera robbed what could have been a nice hit for Andrew Benintendi, who has already been electric in Boston.  It was 4-2 Red Sox.  Would they hold on?  Oh yeah they did!  They dropped 6 more runs on the board!  Three innings in a row they scored a pair of runs.

In the 6th, the middle of the Sox lineup was shut down.  But with two outs in the inning and the bases empty, Sandy Leon came up to bat.  With four dingers in the 10 games prior to this, Leon was in good shape for a clutch hit.  He cracked an infield single on a low pitch.  Then up came Brock Holt.  Holt hit another one up the middle.  The Sox had first and second with Andrew Benintendi up, looking for revenge after Miguel Cabrera robbed his first potential hit.  He came through with a bloop single up the middle to score the inning’s 1st run.  Then Pedey came up with 1st and 3rd.  Ian Kinsler was covering second as Benintendi ran with the pitch, opening a whole for Pedroia to knock one between first and second right where Kinsler had been positioned.  That allowed another Sox run and knocked Michael Fulmer out of the game!  He was fresh off a complete game against the AL leading Rangers but today he gave up 6 runs in 5.2 innings against the feisty Sox lineup!

The Sox kept it up in the 7th.  David Ortiz got on for the third time as he punched a big single to right.  Mookie Betts got his first hit, a line drive single into left just above Erick Aybar.  1st and 2nd for Hanley Ramirez.  Ramirez knocked a double high up into right.  The opposite-field hit was in the gap allowing both Ortiz and Betts  to score and it was 8-2 Red Sox.

The Red Sox struck again in the 8th!  Andrew Benintendi drove a change-up into right for a stand-up double to start the inning.  Pedroia followed with an infield single, his second hit of the day.  He stayed hot riding a 10-game hitting streak.  He may not like hitting lead off but he sure is good at it.  1st and 2nd for Bogaerts, who was heading in the opposite direction until a multi-hit game tonight.  The center fielder caught his fly ball but Benintendi advanced to third.  Up came Travis Shaw who was hitting for David Ortiz and he walked.  Later Hanley Ramirez did it again, ripping a 2-run double to left.

The Red Sox were on a roll.  They were up 10-2 as the lineup was explosive, Porcello was dominant, and they even had a nice double play ball to end the 7th.  It was Fireworks Night at Comerica but they might as well have canceled it  because the Red Sox bats took care of that.  The bullpen was even good.  Fernando Abad pitched a 15 pitch inning in 9th inning garbage time.  They shut the Tigers down and 10-2 was the final score.

The Red Sox have two more crucial games against the Tigers.  They will face Daniel Norris and Justin Verlander with Drew Pomeranz and Eduardo Rodriguez pitching for Boston.  Will they win their way into playoff contention, or flop in the 2nd half of the trip?  They are now only a half game out from Toronto.  The Jays lost to Cleveland by late back to back homers, one outside the park and one for the first walk-off inside the park winning HR ever in MLB!

The Red Sox are in good shape and I think they might surprise a lot of fans after 2 last place seasons.  Stay tuned!
